Gabriel Agbonlahor has said that Cristiano Ronaldo cares only about his goals, claiming that younger players in Manchester United are not happy the legendary forward returned to Old Trafford.
Agbonlahor is still not happy with Ronaldo’s attitude in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw away at Newcastle on Monday, despite the Portuguese putting up a better performance and teamwork in their 3-1 win over Burnley on Thursday.
According to the former Aston Villa striker, Manchester United are suffering from lack of harmony and explained why he believes Ronaldo’s gestures during games are intimidating younger teammates.
He said that the former Real Madrid star’s attitude on the pitch is affecting Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho negatively.
“It looks to me like Ronaldo just cares about his goals,” Agbonlahor said in an interview for Football Insider.
“[Against Newcastle] he was throwing his hands up in the air because he wasn’t getting chances. Then after the game, he runs off the pitch sulking and I imagine he’s sulking in the changing room.
“His attitude was off. If I’m Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho I’m scared to have a shot. Every time they have a shot, he’s got his arms up to say, ‘Why haven’t you passed to me?’
“The harmony is not right in that changing room. The form of Rashford and Greenwood has dropped since Ronaldo has been there.
“They can’t express themselves, it’s like they think, ‘I have to pass to Ronaldo, I have to create a chance for Ronaldo.’
“If I was Rashford, Greenwood or Sancho I’d be saying to myself, ‘Oh, why did we have to bring him here?’
“United played their best football of the season against Chelsea with Ronaldo on the bench.”
Cristiano Ronaldo was in fine form for Manchester United, scoring his 8th Premier League goal as the Red Devils defeated Burnley at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Despite Agbonlahor’s call for the legendary Portugal international to be dropped on the bench, the former Juventus superstar would hope to be named in Ralf Rangnick’s starting line-up against Wolves in their next Premier League game.
Manchester United are now sixth in the Premier League table, level on point with West Ham in fifth place and narrowly behind fourth-placed Arsenal with a game in hand.
